Definition of Document
 
It is some information written to preserve rights, or identity or to support the administrative system. The document has a legal capacity and it helps present or assist in presenting a fact. Materialist sources such as antiques, architecture, engravings, stamps, coins, warfare tools, clothes and manuscripts, books, newspapers and audio-visual equipment are all types of documents.

Importance of document

Despite the fact that the world currently witnesses a comprehensive scientific and informational revolution, the document still maintains its position as a genuine source of the information on which scientific studies and research are based. The emergence of international organizations after the second world war such as the UN, the International Justice Court and others have helped preserve, documents and maps used to compile historical facts and proofs which help settles many disputes such as border ones.

Specializations of documents departments
 

This department conducts research on archeological and historical documents relating to cultural heritage, classifies documents according to the dates of their subjects and maintains same in computers and microfilm to protect them.

  1. Local documents which are about 3000 on various topics.

  2. External documents: They include information about Oman and compiled from various countries. They include many Zanzibar, UAE, French, Belgium and Portuguese documents which were translated into Arabic.

  3. Around 51 maps.

  4. Around 508 microfilm tapes.

  5. Around 55 slides.

  6. Around 126 video tapes on

  7. Around 52 audio-visual cassettes

  8. Albums of old and new photos

  9. Albums of postal stamps

  10. Periodicals of all ministries and governments authorities in the Sultanate

  11. Periodicals from Gulf and other Arab countries
