The idea to hold an international book fair in the Sultanate’s capital Muscat came to enhance the cultural, intellectual and awareness aspects of the country and provide the public with opportunities to gain knowledge and information they needed.

The ministry of heritage and culture held the first book fair in 1992 during the period ( Oct 21 to 30th). It was held on an area of 2600 square meter.

The second fair was held from Oct. 20th to 29th 1993. It was held on an area of 2300 square meter. Publishers from 10 countries participated in the fair.

Then the Muscat book fair sessions ceased till 1997 to provide organizers with an opportunity to assess the two previous experiences. And in 1997 a committee was formed from the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, the Ministry of Information and Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) to ensure the continuation of this event which has become one of the prominent book fairs in the Arab world.
