Omani Poetry Festival
During the pre-Islam period Arab Poets used to compete by
reciting their poems and narrate in front of their audience
in what was called Arab markets. As for Omanis, poetry used
to have a distinctive status and in order to preserve this
status, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said issued his
directives to hold a festival for Omani poetry.
The Omani poetry festival succeeded in reflecting Omanis
adherence to their intellectual and cultural heritage. So
far four sessions of this festival were held and
preparations are underway for the fifth session which
coincides with celebrations to mark Muscat as capital of
Arab culture 2006.

The first
Omani poetry festival was held in Nizwa from 12th to
16th December 1998.

The second
Omani poetry festival was held in Sohar from 1st to 5th
October 2000.

The third
Omani poetry festival was held in Salalah from 24th to
28th August 2002.

The fourth
Omani poetry festival was held in Sur from 4th to 8th
December 2004.
