Omani Poetry Festival

During the pre-Islam period Arab Poets used to compete by reciting their poems and narrate in front of their audience in what was called Arab markets. As for Omanis, poetry used to have a distinctive status and in order to preserve this status, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said issued his directives to hold a festival for Omani poetry.

The Omani poetry festival succeeded in reflecting Omanis adherence to their intellectual and cultural heritage. So far four sessions of this festival were held and preparations are underway for the fifth session which coincides with celebrations to mark Muscat as capital of Arab culture 2006.

  • The first Omani poetry festival was held in Nizwa from 12th to 16th December 1998.

  • The second Omani poetry festival was held in Sohar from 1st to 5th October 2000.

  • The third Omani poetry festival was held in Salalah from 24th to 28th August 2002.

  • The fourth Omani poetry festival was held in Sur from 4th to 8th December 2004.
