The Omani Sarooj which is a burnt mud is one of the main materials used in renovating castles, forts and archeological mosques in the Sultanate.

It’s prepared as follows:

  • Accumulating soil from certain areas such as the Wilayat of Nakhal and cleaning it.

  • Soaking it in water for two weeks.

  • Making round shapes of this soil at diameters of around (20 to 30 centimeter) and leaving it for two weeks to dry..

  • The Sarooj making place is called al-Mahabah. It size is (10x10 meter).

  • The rounded shapes of soil are put on each other to reach a height of 120 centimeters.

  • The soil is burnt for two weeks. Then the Sarooj is ready for use.
