Archeological material of the Ministry’s internet site

Shannah Site:

Shannah is located 13 km north east to al-Buttain in the Wilayat of al-Qabil. It is 30 km north east Ibra. Shannah is an oasis with biological and geological diversity. It is surrounded by high lime mountains which act as a natural Defense fortification. A number of wadis run through Shannah and it include neighbouring housing and agricultural complexes. There was proof that the water activity had affected the site topography.

The archeological tombs and rock engraving found at the site included:

Bebi Mariam Shrine

Antiquities occupied a wide area of the city. Ibn Batuta said Qalhat included a big mosque.

Houses ruins and points of ship anchoring were found in the side facing the coast. The site surface was covered by several Chinese porcelain pieces and Islamic pottery.

Qalhat is one of the important sites which indicate the early Islamic trade in the Indian Ocean.
